City of Lawrence

Over time, the City of Lawrence took ownership of the Merrimac Paper Site, which consisted of eighteen buildings with over 1 million square feet of space across three separate parcels along the Merrimack River. Since it stopped producing paper in 2005, the vacant property deteriorated rapidly until a fire in 2014 destroyed many of the remaining buildings. Site Readiness funds were awarded to demolish the dilapidated complex and clean up hazardous materials in preparation for site redevelopment.
